سقط جنین و استدلال ”آغاز فعالیت مغز“

سقط جنین یکی از مسائل مهم در حوزه اخلاق پزشکی است که در دهه‌های اخیر ذهن برخی از فیلسوفان اخلاق را به خود مشغول کرده است. باروخ برودی یکی از فیلسوفان اخلاق است که مدعی است ادعاهای مطرح شده برای آغاز حیات انسانی جنین از جمله نخستین حرکت جنین در رحم، به ادراک درآمدن از سوی انسان‌های دیگر، زیست‌پذیری خارج رحم و وجود مستقل داشتن، هیچ‌کدام نمی‌تواند ویژگی‌ای ضروری برای انسان‌بودن جنین باشد. او آغاز حیات انسانی جنین را از راه تحلیل مرگ به دست آورده و معتقد است که چون انسان با ایست بازگشت‌ناپذیر مغز و به بیان دیگر، مرگ مغزی مرده به‌حساب می‌آید و دیگر او را انسان به‌شمار نمی‌آورند، پس آغاز حیات انسانی نیز با آغاز فعالیت مغز در جنین آغاز می‌شود. برودی مدعی است که فعالیت مغزی جنین در زمانی میان هفته دوم تا پایان ماه سوم آغاز شده و در‌نتیجه جنین در این زمان به‌یقین انسان می‌شود و سقط‌کردن آن به‌لحاظ اخلاقی نادرست است. در این مقاله به بررسی و نقد دیدگاه باروخ برودی پرداخته می‌شود.

Abortion and the the Argument from "Beginning of the Brain Function"

Abortion is an important issue in medical ethics, which has in recent decades concerned moral philosophers. Baruch A. Brody is a moral philosopher who claims that none of the extant suggestions for the onset or beginning of the human life of the fetus can be a necessary property of its humanity; suggestions such as the first movement of the fetus in the womb, its being perceived by other humans, viability of living outside the womb, and independent existence. He tried to discover the beginning of the human life of the fetus through the analysis of death, holding that since a human is considered as dead after irreparable cessation of his or her brain, or alternatively put, after the brain death when it is no longer considered as a human, the beginning of the human life should be taken to be the onset of its brain functions. Brody claims that a fetus begins its brain functions in a period from the second week to the end of the third month, and so a fetus turns into a human being at some point during this period, and it is in this period that abortion is morally wrong. In this paper, we will review and criticize Baruch Brody’s view.
