EFFECT OF SOWING DATES ON POPULATION DEVELOPMENT OF HELICOVERPA ARMIGERA (Hb.) IN COTTON GENOTYPES

Ten advanced genotypes of cotton viz.,fh-115,fh-2007,vh-148, niab-884, fh-113, cim-534, cim-496, cim-707, mj-6 and mj-7 during 2005 and in addition of the above three advanced lines viz. mj-8, nibge-4 and nibge-115 were sown during 2006 to determine the effect of different dates of sowing on the larval population of helicoverpa armigera (hb.) and infestation to the fruiting bodies. genotypes did not show significant difference regarding larval population per plant and infestation percentage of fruiting bodies during 2005 and 2006. number of eggs per plant during 2006 showed significant difference among genotypes. niab- 884 showed maximum number of eggs plant^-1 (0.10) while the minimum (0.10 plant^-1) on nibge-115. averaging the number of eggs in two years early sown cotton (april 05) showed maximum eggs (0.16 plant^-1), larval population (0.05plant^-1), square (0.16%) and boll infestation (0.07%) as compared to late sown crop (june 20), 0.06 plant^-1, 0.001 plant^-1, 0.04% and 0.00%, respectively.
