دربارﮤ واژﮤ طاس / تاس

واژﮤ طاس / تاس سه معنی اصلی دارد: «1. نوعی ظرف. 2. مهرۀ بازی، کعبتین. 3. کچل». در فرهنگ‌های کهن و معاصر فارسی دیدگاه‌های متفاوتی دربارﮤ ریشه و املای این واژه ذکر شده‌است. در این مقاله کوشیده‌ایم دریابیم که واژۀ tās در فارسی میانه به چه معنی بوده و نیز طاس / تاس در معنی‌های یادشده چند واژﮤ هم‌نام است یا یک واژﮤ چندمعنا. افزون بر این، اشاره کرده‌ایم که طاس / تاس به معنی «نوعی ساز کهن» هم هست که این معنی در فرهنگ‌های عمومی و تاریخی فارسی فوت شده‌است. در ادامه، به تاریخچۀ املای واژﮤ طاس / تاس و سرانجام به ریشۀ این واژه پرداخته‌ایم.

remarks on the ṭās / tās

the pair ṭās/tās is associated with three main meanings: 1) a type of container, 2) game piece or dice, and 3) bald. different views have been reported on its etymology and spelling in both old and contemporary dictionaries. the present article strives to unravel the meaning of tās in middle persian and to determine whether the twin ṭās and tās are homonyms with different meanings or a single polysemous word. it is also shown that ṭās referred to a ‘type of ancient musical instrument’ that has become obsolete and extinct from both general and historical dictionaries. subsequently, a history of the spelling of ṭās/tās is provided before its etymology is explored.
