پژوهشگر عرصۀ ژنتیک، دکتر دین هَمر مدعی است، ژنی که منجر به گرایش انسان‌ها به معنویت و اعتقادات دینی می‌شود را کشف نموده است. او این ژن را حاصل تکامل زیستی نوع انسان می‌داند که منجر به ایجاد درگاه‌های ورودی در بخش نورون پس سیناسپی می‌گردد و با انتقال منوآمین‌ها به درون سلول و ایجاد حالات خوش معنوی، او را به سمت معنویت‌گرایی و بالتبع فرض خالق برای هستی سوق می دهد. پژوهش حاضر با استفاده از روش اسنادی (کتابخانه‌ای) توضیح می‌دهد که چگونه براساس تحقیقات آزمایشگاهی بعدی، ژن مورد نظر را نمی‌توان به‌عنوان علت تامه احساسات معنوی جا زد و تنها باید برای آن نقش کوچکی در این فرایند در نظر گرفت. نیز ادعای مطرح‌شده قادر نیست دلایل عقلی و یقینی مبنی‌بر وجود خداوند را بشکند، ازاین‌رو تلاش همر را نمی‌توان نافی وجود متعلق معنویت، یعنی خداوند متعال دانست.
