exploration of the differences between designers’ concepts and users’ readings in urban spaces based on the grounded theory

Authors
Abstract    understanding the desirability and usability of designsabout human behavior and awareness of their needs andpreferences about the environment is crucial for the successof urban designers. attempting to answer questions aboutthe differences and similarities of people’s experience andreading of the environment and describing the surroundingworld as it exists, can provide a reliable knowledge base forimproving urban designers’ professional perspectives.this research aims to answer the following question: what arethe differences between the spaces designed by designers andthe spaces perceived by the people? by reviewing theoreticalliterature and employing the grounded theory researchmethod, this study explores the experiences of individualsand the perspectives of designers about well-designed urbanspaces. by analyzing, coding, and interpreting informationfrom in-depth interviews with these two groups, it developsa model. the model explains the differences in perspectivesand actions between designers and space users.the findings reveal that people’s viewpoints are shaped bytheir personal experiences, while designers’ perspectives areinfluenced by their professional education and theoreticalconcepts. moreover, the study demonstrates that space usersprimarily base their desired mental image on the physicalcomponent of space, followed by its functional and socialcomponents. when evaluating a space, its ability to evokehigher levels of meaning is considered a significant factor.on the other hand, designers prioritize the social and meaningcomponents of a quality urban space, while still recognizingthe importance of the physical and functional aspects. inthe process of designing a space, designers emphasize thephysical and functional components to provide a wide rangeof activities and possibilities.
