The near infrared spectroscopy (nir) method to determine the diesel cetane number (cn) has been successfully designed. 86 representative samples of diesel are selected. these samples span a fairly wide range and their concentrations are more evenly distributed. the multiple linear regression method is chosen to establish the calibration model and 17 samples were used to verify the calibration model. when the significance level is 0.05,the paired t test statistic is 0.06,which is smaller than the t-value 2.12. the repeatability of the nir method is better than the standard method. therefore the nir method to determine the diesel cn is feasible. this nir method may be applicable to the small oil refineries.
