Abstract
Although the matter of “human’s knowledge of God” has an ageold background in the history of philosophy and theology, but it still has occupied the minds of religious intellectuals especially philosophers of religion and even some contemporary epistemologists. Among these thinkers, Farabi believes human’s perceptual ability encounters serious restrictions and obstacles in the knowledge of some things especially God; and the creation of a rational picture of God in human’s mind or intellect ends up with serious problems. In addition, God’s names and attributes are somehow meaningful; and having a valid (true and justified) speech of God such that it does not lead to kalami [Islamic theological] problems (purifying –tanzih of God from other creatures should be done, and there should be no resemblance between Him and other beings) is finally possible through univocal language. Giving a philosophical explanation of human’s knowledge of God, Farabi tries to present a mystical elaboration as well. If “Fosus alHekam” is his book, then he has presented a detailed discussion, using the mystics’ methods, on the obstacles and restrictions of the rational knowledge of God and the necessity of having an intuitional understanding of God. Explaining the above discussions, this writing investigates and criticizes Farabi’s views in this regard and discusses the ideas of some researchers who have dealt with the subject.
