Neuroprotective Effects of mannitol and vitamin C on crush injury of sciatic nerve; an experimental rat study [Mannitol ve C vitamininin siyatik sinir crush hasari{dotless} Üzerine nöroprotektif etkileri; deneysel si{dotless}çan Çali{dotless}şmasi{dotless}]

In this experimental sciatic nerve crush injury model study,early and late neuroprotective efficacy of mannitol and vitamin c. in this study 60 male rats were used. the subjects were divided into 6 groups as sham group (group 1),control group (group 2),1. hour mannitol group (group 3),1. hour vitamin c group (group 4),24. hour mannitol group (group 5) and 24. hour vitamin c group (group 6).at the end of the experimental period,tissue samples were taken for histopathological and biochemical studies. lipid peroxide product malondialdehyde (mda),superoxide dismutase (sod) and catalase (cat) enzyme activities were measured. after mannitol treatment tissue sod and cat activities increased and mda level decreased significantly,at the early period (group iii,p < 0.05) and on the late period (group iv,p < 0.05) than control (group 2) group. and after mannitol treatment tissue cat activities increased and mda level decreased significantly,at the early period (group iv,p < 0.05) and on the late period (group vi,p < 0.05) than control (group 2) group. however,sod activities increased in early period (group iv,p < 0.05). as a result,it was found that application of vitamin c and mannitol intraperitoneally,may be useful on preventing oxidative stress and also mannitol has more neuroprotective efficacy at late period than early period. however,it was concluded that different dose and duration of working in other comprehensive studies might be more beneficial.
