چکیده    Purpose: the purpose of this study is to evaluate the acute period effects of nicergoline, has an effect on increasing local blood flow,in the management of acute peripheral nerve injury. materials and methods: study was performed on wistar albino rats weighing about 200-250 grams by developing sciatic nerve injury with medium pressured smooth aneurysm clip. rats divided into four groups each containing ten animals. in the first group, only sciatic nerve dissection was performed, control group. in second group, sciatic nerve injury was performed and animals were leaved to spontaneous healing. in the third group, after performing sciatic nerve injury rats were given low-dose nicergoline for 7 days. in the fourth group, after sciatic nerve injury rats were given high dose nicergoline for 7 days. before sacrification, for the assessing of sciatic nerve functional index, walking track analysis was performed. in the sciatic nerve tissue samples,interleukin-10,myeloperoxidase,tumor necrosis factor alpha, nerve growth factor, malondialdehyde levels were measured. for the statistical analysis,mann-whitney u test was used and the values lesser than 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. results: sciatic nerve functional index showed statistically significant difference between all groups. tissue interleukin-10 levels showed significant differences between all groups except group iii and iv. tissue tumor necrosis factor-α,myeloperoxidase,malondialdehyde,and nerve growth factor levels showed significant differences between all groups. discussion: nicergoline showed statistically significant effects in the management of acute peripheral nerve injury at the acute period. conclusion: nicergoline may be used in the management of peripheral nerve injuries, especially in the cases that are not good candidates for surgery,at least as an adjuvant therapy. however, this study must be supported by new ones having histopathological bases.
