An unusual complication of cervical disc hernia: Negative-pressure pulmonary edema [Servikal disk hernisinin olağandışı komplikasyonu: Negatif basınçlı akciğer Ödemi]

Negative-pressure pulmonary edema (nppe) is a rare and life-threatening complication of cervical region surgery. we present a 47-year-old female who underwent anterior cervical discectomy with fusion for cervical disc herniation and developed negative pressure pulmonary edema after extubation. she was intubated again and taken to the intensive care unit when desaturation started despite ventilation with 100% o2. she was extubated without any problem after positive-pressure ventilation supported by peep on mv for 2 hours. there were no other problems and the patient was discharged on the 13th postoperative day with no physical or neurological deficit. the purpose of this study is to discuss the diagnosis and treatment of nppe that can develop in the early period following cervical disc surgery. © 2015,ege university press. all rights reserved.
