فهم «میدان» بر مبنای اطوارِ معنایی آن

در این مقاله هدف فهم وجوهی از چیستی فضای «میدان» است که، در بستر زبان فارسی، به مثابۀ مظهری از زندگی فارسی زبانان، قابل بررسی است، و تحقق این مهم فقط با تعمق در واژۀ «میدان» و جست وجوی اطوار معنایی آن امکان می یابد. به این منظور، به سراغ واژه نامه های فارسی و متون تاریخی رفته ایم و اطوار معنایی «میدان» را با بهره مندی از فنون حیطۀ زبان شناسی چون یافتن حوزه های معنایی، کشف روابط مفهومی، و درک استعاره ها جست وجو کرده ایم. با استنباط ریشه ها، معنی ها، ترکیب ها، مفاهیم مرتبط (مترادف و متناظر و متقابل )، و استعاره های «میدان»، این مفهوم را در درون شبکه ای از مفاهیمْ جای داده و معنادار کرده ایم و به روش تفسیری، چیستی آن را روشنی بخشیده ایم. شبکۀ مفاهیم «میدان» زمان مند است و با گذر زمان تحول می یابد. با بررسی تحولات این شبکه به جست وجوی تاریخ مفهوم «میدان» پرداخته ایم و در روند تحولات آن مطالعه کرده ایم. مبتنی بر نتایج حاصل شده، «میدان»، به مثابۀ فضایی عمومی، حوزه های معنایی متعددی را شامل می شود که بر انواع مختلفی از کارکردها و صورت های آن دلالت می کنند و ضمن روشن کردن نقش و غایت «میدان»، از انعطاف این مفهوم خبر می دهند. میدان، در کلان ترین تعبیر، عرصۀ باز و گشاده ای بوده که مجالی برای رویدادهایی بسیار متفاوت فراهم می آورده است، از خریدوفروخت، به مثابۀ امری روزمره و دائمی، تا برگزاری مراسم ویژه در ایامی خاص که بزنگاه مواجهۀ شاه و اعیان با رعایا می شده و سازوکار قدرت را تثبیت می کرده است. «میدان» ظرفی بوده که فرصت نمایاندن و عیان شدن، هنرنمایی، و رقابت را فراهم می آورده و صحنه ای برای نمایش و داوری ترتیب می داده است. بررسی تاریخ این مفهوم، در دل شبکۀ مفاهیمش، از تحولی حکایت می کند که در تحول صحنۀ نمایش «میدان» ریشه دارد، وقتی مردم از تماشاچیانِ نمایشِ اعیان به بازیگرانِ صحنه تبدبل می شوند و میدان «عرصۀ اجتماع» ایشان خواهد بود.

The Understanding of the ‘Maidan’ Based on Its Semantic Gestures

The purpose of this paper is to explore the nature of the ‘maidan’ (the Persian square) in the Iranian context, by pondering the word ‘maidan’ and the different aspects of its meanings. To do so, we draw upon Persian dictionaries and historical texts and explore the meanings of ‘maidan’ using linguistics techniques – such as discovering semantic fields, conceptual relationships, and metaphors – and interpretive research methods. The semantics of the maidan has evolved throughout history. Having found its origins, meanings, compounds, related concepts (synonyms, collocations, contrasts), and metaphors, we have placed ‘maidan’ within its conceptual network and then interpreted its nature in this context. Moreover, we have explored the history of its concept based on the changes in its conceptual network throughout history. The results of this research show that the maidan as a public space involves various semantic fields implying its numerous functions and forms and clarifying its roles, and at the same time demonstrating its flexibility. The maidan, in its most comprehensive sense, has been an open territory providing opportunities for a variety of events to take place: from trading as a quotidian activity, to special ceremonies and important annual festivals attended by rulers to demonstrate their power. It has been a container providing the possibility for performing as well as watching the performers and the audience. The history if the maidan is one of evolution from that of people as mere spectators into that of people as roleplayers in the public domain.
