Abstract
|
conducting any scientific research requires a special approach in research methodology in that field. methodology serves as a vitalinstrument for all disciplines-whether in the humanities, social sciences, or the natural and basic sciences. the three dominant paradigms in this realm are positivism, interpretivism, and critical theory. positivists maintain that reality is confined to the observable, material world and therefore rely exclusively onempirical, sense-based methods. in contrast, the interpretive paradigm regards human phenomena as fundamentally different from natural ones, emphasizing that external realities are reflections of internal, mental interactions. critical theorists, meanwhile, argue that understanding the deeper layersof social reality requires penetrating beyond the observable surface to uncover underlying structures through critique. hybrid approaches designed to reconcile these paradigms haveproven only partially successful, largely because they stem from divergent worldviews.hence, a new framework is needed.although humanities research has long modeled itself on the methodologies of the natural sciences, recent decades have witnessed an effort by the humanities and social sciences to articulate methodologies that reflect their unique subjectmatter. among these emerging perspectives, the phronetic approach-rooted in aristotle’s notion of phronesis or practical wisdom-offers a promising alternative. achieving a fundamental shift in humanities research requires renewed attention tothe concept of wisdom. while this idea challenges conventional methodological paradigms and exposes some of their core limitations, it also unsettles standard social scientific approachesthat resist non-empirical or value-centered perspectives. the key question, therefore, is what kinds of inquiries and problem-solving capacities become possible when research isguided by phronesis, and what methodological features define a phronetic approach within the human sciences. this paper seeks to clarify these questions by explicating the methodologicalimplications of aristotle’s concept of practical wisdom.
