the american shale revolution and the gas troika’s policies in the middle east

Authors houshisadat mohammad
Abstract    this study examines how the u.s. shale revolution (2017–2025) has transformed the foreign policies of the gas troika-russia, iran, and qatar- in the middle east amid shifting global energy dynamics. while energy security once centered on oil, the emergence of natural gas and unconventional hydrocarbons has ushered in a new era, making the united states the dominant exporter as of 2020. the main research question is: what impact has the shale revolution had on the foreign policy of the gas troika in the middle east? this hypothesis argues that the shale boom forced russia and iran to shift from an offensive to a defensive stance, destabilizing qatar's leadership in the market and leading to the emergence of the qatar-turkey axis. using a mixed methods approach and the theory of aggressive energy realism, this study analyzes how states use energy as a geopolitical tool. the united states, using hard power tactics-sanctions, military pressure, and market competition-significantly weakened the influence of the gas troika, especially in europe and asia. these developments changed global energy alliances and weakened the strategic positions of iran, russia, and qatar. the findings demonstrate how energy abundance can fuel aggressive foreign policy and demonstrate how the united states has transformed from an import-dependent player to a central force in global energy geopolitics, shifting the balance of power in the middle east.
