«گزینش نظریه» از دیدگاه تامس کوهن

این مقاله در پی تبیین و ارزیابی دیدگاه تامس کوهن درباره گزینش نظریه در علوم طبیعی است. فیلسوفان علم براساس تمایز دوتایی مقام کشف/ مقام توجیه بر آن بودند که چون فرایند کشف نظریه قاعده‌مند نیست، فرایند گزینش نظریه که مقام توجیه است ناگزیر باید قاعده‌مند باشد؛ وگرنه عینیت و عقلانیت علم از کف می‌رود. اما تامس کوهن دلیل می‌آورد که فرایند گزینش نیز چندان قاعده‌مند نیست؛ چون ملاک‌های مشترک گزینش از قبیل دقت، دامنه، سازگاری، سادگی و باروری، کارکرد قاعده‌های دقیق و سازگار و بسنده‌ای را ندارند تا همچون برهان، گزینش واحدی را الزام کنند. کارکرد ملاک‌های گزینش مانند ارزش‌هاست که اگرچه بر گزینش تاثیر دارند، اما آن را یکسره تعیّن نمی‌بخشند. وانگهی ارزش‌ها به مداخله عوامل وابسته به زندگی‌ و منش دانشمند راه می‌دهند و امکان اختلاف‌نظر میان دانشمندان را گشوده می‌دارند. آیا کوهن بدین‌سان آخرین پایگاه عینیت و عقلانیت علم را ویران نمی‌کند؟ آیا او نسبی‌‌انگار یا ستاینده نابخردانگی است؟ کوهن هرگز چنین اتهام‌هایی را نپذیرفت.

“Theory Selection” from Thomas Kuhn’s Point of View

This article is an attempt to explain and evaluate Thomas Kuhn’s viewpoint on theory selection in natural sciences. Based on the dichotomy of discovery contextjustification context, philosophers of science believe that since the process of discovery is not rulegoverned, the process of theory choice, which is the context of justification, must inevitably be rulegoverned; otherwise, the objectivity and rationality of science is lost. But Kuhn argued that the selection process is not rulegoverned either, because the common selection criteria such as accuracy, scope, consistency, simplicity, and fertility do not function as precise and consistent rules by which a single choice is necessitated as a proof. The function of selection criteria is like that of values. Although they have an impact on selection, they do not entirely determine it. Moreover, values prepare the grounds for the intervening factors associated with the scientist’s life and manners and facilitate the possibility of differences of opinion among scientists. Does Kuhn, therefore, destroy the last bastion of objectivity and rationality of science? Is he a relativist or an admirer of irrationality? Kuhn never accepted such accusations.
