Abstract
this study investigates the semantic layers of dialogue in the novel i will turn off the lights and examines their role in representing the transformation of the protagonist. based on theoretical definitions, dialogue can be articulated across three semantic levels. at the first or external level, dialogue functions as a tool for characterization and plot development. at the second or intermediate level, it becomes part of the narrative voice, emerging from the communicative pattern between the implied author and the implied reader. finally, at the third or underlying level—and drawing on bakhtinian polyphony—dialogue serves as a medium for the formation of consciousness and thought. this semantic layer emphasizes the significance of mixed voices (voices that show deference or take a stance) and composite voices (voices that enter the core of identity). by analyzing the protagonist's dialogues across these three semantic levels, the study explores the character's evolution and reveals how these layers contribute to a more precise and dynamic depiction of the protagonist's transformation. the findings indicate that dialogue, at all three semantic levels, plays a crucial role in portraying the protagonist's development throughout the narrative.
