انجیل توماس یکی از مهمترین متون کشف شده در کتابخانه نجع حمادی مصر است که در حدود هفتاد سال پیش به دست آمد و به نظر بسیاری از پژوهشگران حوزه مسیحیت نخستین حاوی آموزه های اصیل عیسی است. عیسی است و فردی « فقط » برخلاف سایر اناجیل رسمی، عیسایِ توماس غیرعادی مطرح نمی شود. او بر ای گناهان هیچ کس به صلیب کشیده نشده و نمی میرد و در عید پاک نیز از گور برنخاسته و قیام نمی کند بلکه به همه نوید می دهد که در صورت پیروی از او، مانند او خواهند شد. عیسی در قالبگفته های منحصر به فرد، گفتگوها یا مَثَل های کوتاه، آموزه های عرفانی خود را مطرح می کند و به جای گناه و توبه از ا شراق سخن می گوید. عیسایِ زنده ای که نیامده است تا ما را به خاطر گناه ازلی آدم وحوا نجات دهد، بلکه به عنوان مرشدی الهی و نجات دهنده ای ربّانی قصد دارد دریچه ای به شناخت روحانی برای مخاطبانش بگشاید تا طعم مرگ را نچشند.
