مفاهیم اخلاقی فربه و نقش آنها در نقد فروکاهش ‌گرایی در اخلاق

مفاهیم فربه اخلاقی، در مقابل مفاهیم نحیف اخلاقی، که گفته می‌شود صرفاً واجد بار ارزشی اند، مفاهیمی اند که علاوه بر بار ارزشی بار توصیفی نیز دارند.  این مفاهیم در اخلاق کاربرد فراوانی دارند. این مقاله استدلال می‌کند که اولاً، وجه ارزشیِ این مفاهیم از وجه توصیفی آنها انفکاک‌ناپذیر است و بنابراین قابل تحویل به مفاهیم نحیف اخلاقی هم نیست؛ ثانیاً، فربهی امری ذومرتبه است، و از هر مفهوم فربه، با افزودن محتوای توصیفی، می‌توان مفهومی فربه‌تر ساخت. همپای تغییر محتوای توصیفیِ این مفاهیم بار ارزشی آنها نیز تغییر می‌کند، تغییری کیفی که قابل فروکاستن به مفاهیم نحیف ارزشی، حتّی با درجات متفاوت، نیست. علاوه بر این، ضمن فربه‌تر شدن یک مفهوم پای واقعیّاتی از انواع مختلف نیز پیش کشیده می‌شود که کار ارزش‌داوری در باب آنها را پیچیده‌تر می‌سازد. ما در زندگی اخلاقی‌مان با فربه‌ترین مفاهیم سروکار داریم، که نمی‌توانند در قالب اصول عام صورتبندی شوند. ازاین‌رو نمی‌توان ملاک سنجش‌گری‌ اخلاقی در موارد خاص را به چند اصل کلّی فروکاست، بلکه این سنجش‌گری امری بسیار پیچیده‌تر است و هر شخصی در هر موقعیّتی خود باید بار آن را به دوش بگیرد.

thick moral concepts are moral concepts that are claimed to bear both evaluative and descriptive content, as opposed to thin ones which bear only the former. this paper firstly argues that the descriptive aspect of these concepts cannot be disentangled from their evaluative aspect. so their evaluative aspect cannot be reduced to thin moral concepts. secondly, thickness is a gradable concept; any thick concept can be made thicker through adding new descriptive content. along with changes in the descriptive content of the concept, its evaluative content changes as well; a qualitative change that cannot be reduced to thin evaluative concepts, even if they vary in degree. on this basis and through some other considerations it is concluded that moral deliberations in specific cases are not possible through simply applying general principles which are commonly expressed through thin concepts. rather, each individual is entrusted with the task of deliberation in each particular case on their own.
