آیا علم می‌تواند ‌طبیعی‌ گرایی فلسفی را به چالش بکشد؟ تامّلی بر رابطه ‌طبیعی‌ گرایی فلسفی و طبیعی ‌گرایی روش ‌شناختی

‌طبیعی ‌گرایی فلسفی شامل این ادعا است که در جهان تنها هویات طبیعی وجود دارند. این دیدگاه، با فراطبیعی‌گرایی که وجود هویاتی همچون خداوند، روح و ... را فرض می‌گیرد در تعارض بوده و اختلاف بین آنها موضوع مناقشات فلسفی گوناگونی بوده‌است. در مناقشات اخیر، علاوه بر ادلّه فلسفی، علم نیز به عنوان زاویه ورود مورد استفاده قرار گرفته و چارچوب بحث را از برهان‌های صرفاً فلسفی، به برهان‌های علمی-فلسفی تغییر داده‌است. در این مقاله به این پرسش می‌پردازیم که در چنین چارچوبی، نظریه‌های علمی علی‌الاصول می‌توانند ‌طبیعی‌گرایی فلسفی را به چالش بکشند یا نه؟ ادعا این است که این پرسش مدافعین ‌طبیعی‌گرایی فلسفی را بر سر یک دوراهی قرار می‌دهد. اگر به این پرسش پاسخی منفی بدهند، علم دیگر نمی‌تواند داوری مشروع و منبعی قابل قبول برای داوری میان ‌طبیعی‌گرایی و فرا‌طبیعی‌گرایی باشد. در عین حال پاسخ مثبت و پذیرش چالش‌برانگیزی نیز برای طبیعی‌گرایان هزینه‌ای دارد، چرا که مستلزم آن است که از تعهد به طبیعی‌گرایی روش‌شناختی دست بردارند. زیرا تعهد طبیعی‌گرایی ایجاب می‌کند یافته‌های علمی همواره مویّد ‌طبیعی‌گرایی فلسفی بوده و هرگز مویّد فراطبیعی‌گرایی نباشند. بنابراین طبیعی‌گرای فلسفی برای آن که از علم در دفاع از دیدگاه خود بهره ببرد و در عین حال متهم به جزمی‌گری نشود، ناچار است طبیعی‌گرایی روش‌شناختی را به عنوان اصلی ضروری برای فعالیت علمی قرار ندهد.

could science challenge philosophical naturalism? on the relation of philosophical and methodological naturalism

the long-term naturalism-supernaturalism debate among philosophers has been developed with respect to the question of the existence of supernatural entities. according to philosophical naturalism, all there is are natural; while supernaturalists postulate supernatural entities like god, soul, etc. in their ontological framework. recently the most heated debates on this issue are informed by scientific theories and the philosophers of both camps invoke the contemporary scientific achievements in their philosophical arguments. this paper is concerned with the question: is it possible for philosophical naturalism to be challenged by scientific theories? the importance of this question is due to the dilemma it puts in the foreground of philosophical naturalists. if the philosophical naturalist answers the question negatively, she cannot legitimately appeal to scientific theories as empirical evidence in favor of her position. because then science by default and regardless of its empirical content would confirm naturalism. on the other hand, the acceptance of the possibility of challenge would be available just at the expense of discarding methodological naturalism. methodological naturalism as a principle that excludes any supernatural entity or supernaturalistic premise from scientific explanations, guarantees the compatibility of scientific worldview with naturalism, and eliminates the possibility of challenge. therefore, if the naturalist wants to benefit from science in her arguments against supernaturalists in a non-dogmatic manner, she has to give up methodological naturalism as a necessary principle of scientific inquiry.
