تاملی در سمانتیک و متافیزیک قابلیت‌ها

هدفِ نخستِ مقالۀ حاضر معرفیِ مبحثِ قابلیت‌ها در فلسفۀ تحلیلی و روایتِ تاریخِ آن از زاویۀ مسئله‌های سمانتیکی و متافیزیکیِ آن‌ها است. برای این منظور من ابتدا پرسشِ سمانتیکی و پرسشِ متافیزیکی در قبالِ قابلیت‌ها را از هم تفکیک می‌کنم. سپس پنج رویکردِ سمانتیکِ مختلف به قابلیت‌ها (یعنی تحلیلِ شرطیِ ساده، تحلیل‌ناپذیر دانستن، تحلیل‌های شرطیِ اصلاح‌شده، تحلیلِ نوعی و تحلیلِ مدرج) و متافیزیک‌های متناظر با آن‌ها را معرفی می‌نمایم. به نظرِ من نقدهایی که بر تحلیلِ شرطیِ ساده و تحلیل‌های شرطیِ اصلاح‌شده وارد آمده است برای ردِّ آن‌ها کافی است. من علاوه بر روایتِ این نقدها سه نقدِ جدید علیهِ تحلیلِ نوعی و دو نقدِ تازه نیز بر تحلیلِ مدرج وارد می‌کنم. در نتیجه از دیدِ من رویکردِ سمانتیکی که قابلیت‌ها را تحلیل‌ناپذیر می‌داند ارجح است. این تحلیل‌ناپذیری و به همراهِ امکانِ قابلیت‌هایی که هرگز به نمایش در نمی‌آیند دلایلِ خوبی را برای رویکردِ متافیزیکیِ قابلیت‌باوری فراهم می‌آورد.

The semantics and metaphysics of dispositions

The present paper is initially intended to provide an introduction to the literature on the metaphysics and semantics of dispositions in analytic philosophy. To this end, I characterize five semantic approaches to disposition ascriptions (the simple conditional analysis, the modified conditional analyses, the unanalyzable approach, the generic account, and the graded models) and show what kind of metaphysic is consistent with each of them. With this survey on the table, I am inclined to say that the arguments against the simple and modified conditional analyses are sufficiently good to refute these analyses. In addition to that, I put forward several arguments against the generic account and the graded model, arguing that the unanalyzable approach is preferable to its opponents. Finally, given this analyzability and the possibility of unmanifesting dispositions, I side with the kind of dispositionalism suggested by Martin and Heil
