The catalytic performance of tungstophosphoric acid hydrate h3[pw12o40] (hpa) was evaluated in the condensation reaction of meldrum’s acid with aldehydes, ethylacetoacetate, and ammonium acetate to yield the corresponding 2-methyl-6-oxo-4-aryl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyridine-3-carboxylates. this procedure presents a simple, rapid, and efficient one-pot method for the preparation of these hantzsch-like products. the procedure takes place at 80 °c in water, which is an environmentally benign medium, and gives good to excellent yields in short reaction times.
