Abstract    fear-consciousness, death-consciousness, and west-consciousness are three existential moods (stimmungen), and thus three distinct modes of being-in-the-world, each bringing forth its own unique understanding for human existence. although fear-consciousness is fundamentally an existentialist concept rooted in the thought of the 19th-century danish philosopher søren kierkegaard, it was later expanded by philosophers such as martin heidegger and jean-paul sartre. at its core, fear-consciousness denotes a state of being intrinsically linked to death-consciousness, culminating in a being-toward-death—a mode of existence anchored in mortality. henry corbin (the french philosopher and iranologist) offered a distinctive interpretation of these two concepts through the lens of shiʿi philosophy, further explicating them in relation to the illuminationist (ishraqi) notion of west-consciousness. for corbin, west-consciousness likewise constitutes a mode of being-within-the-world that opens specific epistemic possibilities for human understanding. in this article, we aim to elucidate the interrelations among these three concepts in corbin’s philosophy.
