Abstract
effective management of water resources and land use is essential for maintaining ecological balance and the sustainability of our vital ecosystem services. this study examines how land use changes affect ecosystem services and environmental sustainability in the lordegan watershed, utilizing a water balance model. land use changes, including the conversion of barren lands and mixed forests to rangelands, significantly affect interception, runoff, evaporation, and groundwater recharge. the model simulates temporal and spatial changes in water balance components using input data from nine hydro-climatic stations located in the lordegan watershed. the results indicate that changes in precipitation patterns and their interaction with temperature and other climatic elements influence potential evapotranspiration and water consumption. this detailed analysis examines these impacts and provides recommendations for optimal water resource management and ecosystem service preservation, offering a comprehensive view of the effects of land use changes on various components of the water cycle. it also proposes strategies for conserving water resources against future changes. the study's analysis of land use changes and their impact on water balance components reveals that the transition from forests to rangelands and agricultural lands, particularly in mixed forests with the highest contribution to groundwater recharge, has led to significant changes in actual evaporation, runoff, and interception. informed decisions regarding land development and use can help preserve water resources mangers, prevent soil erosion, and protect biodiversity. the water balance results demonstrate satisfactory simulation of the total streamflow from the lordegan watershed and underscore the importance of land use changes in water resource management and sustainable development.
