embodied ethics: a critique of the neurophilosophy approach in designing learning environments

Abstract

focusing on a physicalist approach, churchland aims to describe embodied agency by eliminating free will, consciousness, and intentionality from ethics. therefore, in the first step, essential concepts of churchland's neurophilosophy and varela's neurophenomenology were analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method in the context of learning environments. then, to facilitate embodied ethical agency, the relationship between embodiment and disembodiment in general, and the intertwining of embodiment in learning situations specifically, was examined.the results of the studies indicated that agency in the domain of embodied ethics is a situational matter formed through the interaction of mind and brain within the cultural, social, and biological environment. thus, moving beyond any form of monism or dualism—mind-brain, inside-outside, individual-collective—the aim is to explore the possibility of adopting a holistic approach that accepts both first-person and third-person experiences together with the intentionality of lived experiences in ethics within learning environments. the interactive event of mind-brain continually opens, layers, and unpredictably transforms the shared world of the teacher and students in learning environments. in this open interaction, through embodied proximity of individual ethics with others or with environmental agents, the educational environment is repeatedly constructed and reconstructed. however, this research seeks to find another facet of radical embodiment in the design of learning environments by elaborating on churchland's causal approach. the goal here is to describe the interrelationship between first-person and third-person experiences under the situated embodiment approach.
