Abstract
products that contain conflicting opinions create hesitation in users’ decision-making. user preferences vary, and these differences lead to different experiences of the same product. such opinion discrepancies can cause confusion for new users and harm the seller or product provider. in this paper, a framework is proposed for identifying and exploiting “controversial items” (items that have received simultaneous positive and negative feedback from different user groups) in recommender systems. the main objective is to improve the quality of recommended shortlists with an emphasis on accuracy. the proposed method is designed based on the integration of three main components: detection of controversial items using modified statistical criteria, unsupervised clustering on users’ latent representations to identify like-minded groups, and candidate generation and scoring performed in a conservative manner using a combination of latent and content-based signals. as a conceptual implementation and for evaluating the proposed method, the framework was applied to the movielens dataset to demonstrate its ability to recommend movies; the goal of this implementation is conceptual and practical evaluation of the method, rather than merely achieving the highest metric scores.
