obilenetv2-atrous: a lightweight model for intelligent monitoring and detection of plant leaf diseases with deployability on mobile agricultural robots

Authors
Abstract    **automatic detection of apple leaf diseases** plays a crucial role in enhancing productivity and reducing waste in smart agriculture. traditional methods based on visual inspection are time-consuming, costly, and prone to errors. furthermore, heavy deep learning models, despite their high accuracy, are unsuitable for deployment on robotic systems and edge devices with limited resources. additionally, laboratory datasets often fail to represent real orchard conditions, reducing the model s generalizability. in this study, a lightweight and accurate framework based on **mobilenetv2-atrous** and the multi-domain **al9ee dataset** is presented. by leveraging advanced data augmentation techniques including **randaugment**, **cutout**, **mixup**, and **cutmix**, the model s generalization capability was improved, and overfitting was reduced. the key innovation lies in replacing standard depthwise convolutions with **atrous depthwise convolutions**, which expand the network s receptive field without increasing parameters, enabling the simultaneous identification of local and contextual patterns of diseases. the model, trained using **mixed precision training** and the **adamw** optimizer, achieved a validation accuracy of **98%**. after **int8 quantization**, the model size was reduced by approximately **75% (from 14 mb to 3.5 mb)**, making it deployable on edge processors and ground robots. the confusion matrix results and **roc curves** demonstrate the model s balanced and reliable performance in detecting nine disease classes and healthy leaves. this framework offers a combination of high accuracy, lightweight architecture, and practical deployability, representing an effective step toward the development of **real-time robotic monitoring systems** for plant diseases.
