Abstract
**rapid and non-destructive detection of fresh and defective eggs** in industrial production lines is a major challenge in the food and agricultural industries. traditional methods based on eggshell breakage are destructive and unsuitable for direct application in industrial manufacturing. in this study, an automated system based on **infrared (ir) candling images** and **hybrid feature extraction**—including **textural features (lbp)**, edge-based features, **shape features (hog)**, and geometric features—is proposed to classify eggs as fresh or defective using only shell images. the collected dataset comprised 1000 samples of fresh and defective eggs captured in an industrial environment under dark-field infrared illumination. all images were preprocessed, and textural, edge-based, and geometric features were extracted. for classification, two classical machine learning algorithms—**svm with rbf kernel** and **random forest with 100 trees**—were trained, and their performance was evaluated using **stratified 10-fold cross-validation**. results showed that both models achieved an accuracy of over **95%**, with stable performance across all folds. in addition to high accuracy, the use of simple features and classical models makes the system lightweight, interpretable, and suitable for industrial deployment. this study is the first to investigate the combination of infrared candling imaging with classical machine learning for egg quality assessment, enabling practical and rapid implementation in industrial production lines.
