Abstract
this study investigated the growth performance and survival of native benni fish in co-culture with three tilapia species (zilli, blue, and nile) over 60 days. the experiment included 22 treatments divided into four main groups (control, benni-zilli, benni-blue, and benni-nile), each conducted in triplicate. treatments were designed based on different weight ratios (10% and 30% differences) and stocking densities (2:1, 1:2, and 1:5). the results showed that in the benni-zilli combination, increased benni weight led to improved growth for benni, while zilli’s growth decreased as benni’s weight increased. both species showed similar growth patterns across different densities, but higher benni weight and density enhanced their survival rate. zilli exhibited higher survival in treatments with lower benni ratios. in the benni-blue treatments, variations in weight and density had no significant effect on benni’s growth, while blue tilapia showed better growth performance than benni. the average survival rates recorded were 97% for benni and 94% for blue. in the benni-nile combinations, increasing the density of benni had no adverse effect on nile’s growth; in fact, nile’s growth indicators improved. however, benni did not reach 100% survival in any treatment, while nile achieved complete survival in four treatments, highlighting its strong competitive advantage. overall, nile had the most negative impact on benni, while blue had the least. benni lacks interspecies competitive ability against tilapia, and its co-culture with nile tilapia is strongly discouraged. to protect benni’s native ecosystem, preventing the introduction of any tilapia species is essential.
