sustainable intensification of common carp (cyprinus carpio) production: a comprehensive feasibility study of biofloc system

Authors
Abstract    this study evaluated the feasibility of culturing common carp (cyprinus carpio) in biofloc systems, focusing on the effects of different carbon-to-nitrogen (c/n) ratios (15, 20, 25) and dietary protein levels (25%, 30%, 35%) on growth performance, blood parameters, and immune responses. a total of 750 fingerlings (mean weight: 17 g) were randomly distributed into 30 fiberglass tanks (250 l; 25 fish per tank) and cultured for 56 days. the lowest weight gain and specific growth rate were observed in the 35% protein treatment with c/n=25, showing significant differences compared to the control (p < 0.05). the feed conversion ratio was significantly higher in this same treatment. protein efficiency ratio reached its maximum in the 30% protein treatment with c/n=25, while the lowest daily protein intake was recorded in the 25% protein treatment with c/n=15. hemoglobin, hematocrit, and cortisol levels showed no significant differences among treatments (p > 0.05). plasma glucose and lactate levels significantly increased in the 35% protein treatment with c/n=25 and c/n=20 (p < 0.05). total protein and serum albumin were lower in the control group, while globulin (an immune indicator) increased in biofloc treatments. serum bactericidal activity and lysozyme levels significantly improved in the 25% protein treatment with c/n=25, while total complement activity showed significant enhancement in the 30% protein treatment with c/n=15. ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels remained more stable and lower than the control in the 25% protein treatments with c/n=15 and 20. therefore, the combination of c/n=15-20 with 25-30% dietary protein was identified as the optimal condition for common carp culture in biofloc systems.
