sustainable fishing with minimal environmental impact and fuel consumption

Authors
Abstract    hook and line fishing, encompassing recreational, sport, and commercial activities (including individual fishing and long-line systems), is recognized as a relatively selective method with a significant role in sustainable fisheries management. compared to more destructive methods such as trawling, it has lower environmental impacts on habitats and non-target species, and when properly managed, can serve as an effective tool for supporting local livelihoods, reducing overfishing, and conserving aquatic stocks. reviewing scientific sources and field reports indicates that factors such as hook design (notably the use of circle hooks), the type and number of hooks, spatial and temporal fishing patterns, and bait types play key roles in reducing mortality of non-target species, improving post-release survival rates, and enhancing the ecological efficiency of this method. evidence also shows that the use of by-catch reduction devices, such as colored lines, magnetic hooks, and deterrent mechanisms for marine mammals and turtles, has significantly mitigated negative impacts. nevertheless, challenges such as gear loss, marine debris from abandoned hooks and lines, and lack of digital tracking and retrieval systems remain critical environmental threats. some studies highlight the annual loss of billions of hooks and hundreds of kilometers of fishing lines as a serious source of hidden pollution in marine ecosystems. study findings also suggest that implementing participatory programs with fishers, developing regional regulations tailored to ecological and social conditions, offering economic incentives for low-impact gear use, and employing tracking and recovery technologies can improve the efficiency and sustainability of hook and line fishing at various scales. overall, integrating technical, social, and managerial approaches positions hook and line fishing as a promising model for sustainable fisheries
