Abstract
the fisheries sector faces critical challenges including iuu fishing, stock depletion, and environmental pressures. since the 2010s, artificial intelligence (ai) has emerged as a transformative solution through technologies like computer vision, deep learning, and electronic monitoring (em), enhancing ecological sustainability and operational efficiency. ai-driven systems such as ai-rcas achieve 74–81% species recognition accuracy, enabling real-time catch analysis to support total allowable catch (tac) compliance and combat iuu fishing. machine learning algorithms process satellite data (ais/viirs) and historical records to track vessel behavior, predict iuu hotspots, and optimize fishing zones. practical implementations like the netherlands fully documented fisheries (fdf) project utilize computer vision for automated species/size identification, reducing bycatch by 30% and strengthening regulatory adherence. concurrently, ai optimizes fishing routes by analyzing oceanic variables (temperature, currents), significantly lowering fuel consumption and operational costs. key benefits encompass enhanced supply chain transparency, 30% cost reduction, and sustainable resource management. however, persistent challenges include the need for comprehensive training data to address biodiversity complexity, performance limitations in unstable marine environments, and high initial deployment costs. in conclusion, maximizing ai s potential requires cross-sector collaboration (governments, fishers, developers) and standardized data-sharing frameworks to align with sustainable development goals (sdgs). future advancements must prioritize robustness in marine settings, dataset expansion for global scalability, and policy integration to fully harness ai s capacity for revolutionizing fisheries sustainability
