applications of graph neural networks in smart power grids: a comprehensive review on fault detection and prediction

Authors
Abstract    in recent years, the application of graph neural networks (gnns) in the analysis, diagnosis, and prediction of faults in smart power grids has grown rapidly. this review aims to systematically examine recent research trends and identify emerging directions in this field. representative studies, including node–edge attributed models, temporal and cascading sequence frameworks, physics-guided architectures, and standardized datasets, are reviewed and critically analyzed. the findings reveal that gnns, by capturing the topological structure of power networks and learning the underlying physical relationships among system components, demonstrate strong capabilities in dynamic behavior prediction and reliability enhancement of power systems. nevertheless, several challenges remain, such as the scarcity of stepwise temporal data, limited model interpretability, and incomplete integration of graph, temporal, and physical dimensions. future research opportunities lie in developing explainable gnn models, integrating iot-driven data sources, and extending graph-based learning to multi-energy networks to advance fault analysis and resilient grid operations.
