Abstract
with the growth of energy consumption in the building sector and environmental pressures, energy optimization in smart homes has become a priority for policymakers and industry. the integration of iot, smart sensors, and artificial intelligence algorithms (especially machine learning) enables prediction, adaptive control, and real-time decision-making. adopting a targeted literature review approach, this paper reviews the architecture and technical components of smart homes, classifies and compares supervised, unsupervised, semi-supervised, and reinforcement learning algorithms in energy management, analyzes key challenges such as data scalability, security and privacy, protocol heterogeneity, and implementation costs, and suggests future directions such as federated learning, multi-objective hybrid models, and interpretable algorithms. the results of the review indicate that the systematic use of machine learning models can lead to significant energy consumption reduction and increased occupant well-being. finally, a research-application framework is presented to bridge the gap between real-world implementations and academic achievements.
