Abstract
ground penetrating radar (gpr) is a non-destructive tool for detecting buried objects underground. one of the most important challenges in using gpr data is the presence of environmental clutter. in natural environments, soil is layered and non-uniform in composition along depth; that is, each layer has different electrical properties. each subsurface layer has distinct electrical properties, and changes in the dielectric constant at the boundaries lead to additional reflections, which cause clutter. in this study, gpr data were simulated using the gprmax software based on the fdtd numerical method. the data were generated to resemble realistic subsurface and layered environments. the simulated scenarios include a single buried object, a buried object in a layered medium, multiple buried objects, and multiple buried objects in a layered medium. finally, several matrix decomposition and artificial intelligence–based methods were applied to remove clutter caused by soil layers. these methods include principal component analysis (pca), non-negative matrix factorization (nmf), robust principal component analysis (rpca), godec decomposition, and robust orthonormal subspace learning (rosl). the results show that in complex layered environments, while preserving the main hyperbolic signal, the rosl method provides superior clutter removal. this conclusion was confirmed by calculating the peak signal-to-noise ratio (psnr). the psnr values for the four scenarios, from the simplest to the most complex, were 167, 197, 72, and 37, respectively. compared with the other methods, rosl achieved better performance by 33.60%, 80.73%, 38.46%, and 32.14% in each scenario.
