a hybrid framework based on long short-term memory and genetic algorithm for optimizing public bus fleet scheduling in the iranshahr–chabahar corridor

Authors
Abstract    efficient management of public transport fleets in high-demand corridors is a critical challenge in transportation planning. the rapid increase in intercity travel demand, particularly in the strategic corridors of southeastern iran, highlights the need for intelligent scheduling methods. this paper proposes a hybrid framework that integrates long short-term memory (lstm) networks [1] for travel time prediction with a genetic algorithm (ga) [4] for bus dispatch optimization. in the first stage, the lstm model is trained using historical data, including traffic volume, weather conditions, peak-hour indicators, and fleet capacity, to predict travel times for each route [2,3]. in the second stage, the predicted travel times are fed into the ga, which generates and evaluates bus dispatch schedules under multiple operational constraints. the objective function incorporates normalized delay, capacity utilization, and headway regularity [4,5]. simulation results for the iranshahr–chabahar corridor demonstrate that the proposed framework reduces the average delay by more than 50% (from 25 to 12 minutes), improves on-time performance (otp) from 68% to 89% under a 10-minute threshold, and increases headway regularity (hr) from 0.62 to 0.91. moreover, the network-wide objective function value decreased by approximately 35% [6,7]. the findings confirm that combining data-driven prediction models with evolutionary optimization provides a powerful tool for enhancing service reliability and operational efficiency in public transport systems. from a practical perspective, this framework reduces passenger waiting times, improves user confidence, and increases the overall efficiency of bus operators [9,10]. furthermore, the approach is consistent with recent studies in intelligent transportation and can be extended to other high-demand corridors across the country
