potentials and challenges of using artificial intelligence in geosciences: case study on its application in predictive modeling

Authors
Abstract    with the increase in data extent and complexity of geological processes, the use of artificial intelligence (ai) has become an efficient tool for analyzing, modeling, and predicting natural phenomena. the increasing use of ai in geosciences requires a deeper understanding of the decision-making process, especially in sensitive and complex applications. the purpose of this paper is to examine the opportunities and challenges of applying artificial intelligence in the field of earth sciences, emphasizing the importance of using explainable artificial intelligence (xai) models to increase transparency in decision-making. as a case study, the effectiveness of traditional artificial intelligence methods and explainable models in predicting the penetration rate in a tunnel boring machine (tbm) is compared. the results show that the explainable model, while providing appropriate accuracy, allows for the analysis of relationships between features and output and provides a better understanding of the physical mechanisms associated with the excavation process. these findings emphasize the need to pay attention to the interpretability of models in earth science applications.
