Abstract
objective: liquidity mismatch serves as a fundamental structural variable within the banking system; while essential for financial intermediation, it simultaneously constitutes a primary source of systemic risk. this study aims to elucidate the mechanistic link between firm-level liquidity mismatch and macro-level financial stability, examining the evolution of this landscape with a specific focus on post-2008 financial crisis evidence and the challenges posed by the digital era.methodology: employing a conceptual synthesis approach, this review integrates and analyzes theoretical foundations, empirical evidence, and policy documents, including reports from the basel committee and the imf.findings: theoretical analysis reveals that maturity transformation inherently exposes banks to depositor runs, allowing liquidity imbalances to propagate to the broader system via two primary contagion channels: interbank linkages and asset fire sales. empirical evidence indicates that the 2008 crisis was largely driven by excessive reliance on short-term wholesale funding. conversely, the 2023 failures (e.g., silicon valley bank) have unveiled a new paradigm termed digital bank runs, characterized by a velocity of fund withdrawals that deprives regulators of the necessary intervention window.conclusion: although the implementation of basel iii macroprudential tools (such as lcr and nsfr) has enhanced banking sector resilience, these instruments may negatively impact profitability by constraining liquidity creation. consequently, ensuring sustainable financial stability necessitates a transition from reactive to proactive approaches, the integration of monetary and prudential policies, and the formulation of regulatory frameworks adaptable to the velocity of digital transformations.
