integrated process modeling of inventory dynamics in a two‑echelon supply chain for ameliorating and deteriorating items

Authors
Abstract    in this research, an integrated inventory management model is developed for a two‑echelon supply chain consisting of a vendor and a buyer, where the items are simultaneously affected by amelioration and deterioration processes. the system behavior is modeled across three consecutive time phases. in the first phase, the vendor receives an initial quantity of ameliorating items from the producer before their growth is complete. through accumulation, the vendor’s inventory increases under the combined effects of amelioration and deterioration until it reaches its maximum level. in the second phase, continuous shipment of ameliorated items to the buyer begins, leading the vendor’s inventory to decrease gradually to zero, while the buyer’s inventory increases through the combined effects of continuous inflow from the vendor, demand fulfillment, and deterioration. in the final phase, as the vendor’s stock is depleted, only the buyer remains active, and its inventory decreases solely due to demand and deterioration until exhaustion. accordingly, an integrated profit‑maximization model is formulated for the centralized supply chain, incorporating the vendor’s purchase, holding, amelioration, and deterioration costs, as well as the buyer’s holding and deterioration costs and a revenue function dependent on the vendor’s amelioration duration. numerical results reveal that the initial order quantity, amelioration period, and continuous flow rate have the greatest impact on the total system profit. incorporating the amelioration process leads to higher profitability and faster product availability in the market, while sensitivity analysis shows that each of the amelioration and deterioration rates has its own optimal range, and that combining a longer amelioration period with a lower transfer rate can significantly enhance system profitability.
