microbeads in personal care products: a threat to seafood safety and the need for global standards

Microbeads, intentionally manufactured microscopic polymer particles used in many personal care products, are a persistent source of microplastic contamination in coastal waters. when washed off, these particles bypass or partially evade wastewater treatment and accumulate in sediments and biota, raising concern about their entry into seafood and subsequent human exposure. this paper integrates multidisciplinary evidence on the lifecycle of cosmetic microbeads, maps pathways from product use to seafood contamination, and assesses the implications for seafood safety through trophic transfer and contaminant-vectoring mechanisms. it then critiques existing national and international regulatory responses, identifying four principal gaps: inconsistent particle definitions and size thresholds, lack of harmonized analytical protocols, absence of environmental-release metrics tied to products, and weak integration between cosmetic regulation and food-safety frameworks. the main contribution of this study is the development of a harmonized standardization framework that unifies particle definitions, establishes method-validated sampling and analytical procedures, introduces product-level release limits informed by environmental fate, and operationalizes links between microplastic monitoring and seafood safety assessment. this framework provides a pragmatic route toward international regulatory convergence, enabling comparable datasets, reducing marine microbead inputs, and strengthening protection of seafood quality. adoption of this model would bridge currently disconnected regulatory domains and support science-based policy for safeguarding both marine ecosystems and public health.
