evaluation of standard formulae for designing the connection of longitudinal stiffeners to transverse frames in ship hull structure

Authors
Abstract    structural connections in shipbuilding play a pivotal role in load transfer and maintaining the overall structural integrity of the vessel. due to stress concentration, these connections are highly susceptible to fatigue failures, stress-corrosion cracking, and fracture. the design of these connections is predominantly based on standard formulae provided by classification societies, which, despite reducing design time and cost, do not accurately reflect the detailed structural behavior. this study compares the force transmission capacity at the connection of longitudinal stiffeners to transverse frames in cut-out regions, as determined by dnv-gl standard formulae, with the results from finite element analysis across nine different scenarios. the results demonstrate that numerical analysis, which accounts for geometric details and the precise location of the connection, provides higher accuracy than the standard formulae. furthermore, it reveals opportunities for optimizing weld lengths, reducing material and energy consumption, and enhancing structural reliability. the findings underscore the necessity of revising and improving the standard formulae by incorporating numerical results to increase their accuracy and alignment with modern shipbuilding production processes.
