smart ems based on scada–facts: simultaneous optimization of energy and reactive power in the 33/400 kv network of sefiddasht steel plant using real-time control

Authors
Abstract    this study proposes a data-driven framework for a smart energy management system (ems) tailored to steel manufacturing facilities equipped with flexible ac transmission system (facts) devices. leveraging real-time scada data, the system collects voltage, current, and reactive power measurements at 20-millisecond intervals. a long short-term memory (lstm) neural network is employed to forecast load and reactive power demand up to 5 seconds ahead. a multi-objective optimization problem is formulated, incorporating weighted criteria for minimizing energy consumption and reactive power deviation. the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm ii (nsga-ii) is utilized to solve the optimization, and the resulting control actions are applied in real time to facts devices, specifically statcom and svc. simulation results conducted in matlab/simulink on a representative steel plant model—featuring svc at the 33 kv level and a final bus at 400 kv—demonstrate a reduction in energy consumption of up to 12%, alongside an improvement in power factor from 0.92 to above 0.98. the system achieves a response time below 100 milliseconds, maintaining voltage stability within the 0.95–1.05 p.u. range. the proposed ems architecture is compatible with existing scada and facts infrastructures and offers a scalable solution for enhancing energy efficiency and power quality in energy-intensive industrial environments.
