performance improvement of shunt active power filter using multilevel svpwm technique

Authors
Abstract    with the growing proliferation of power electronic equipment, harmonic distortions have emerged as a serious challenge to power quality. this phenomenon, which causes issues such as equipment overheating and increased power losses, necessitates efficient solutions for its mitigation. shunt active power filters (shunt-apf) are recognized as the most effective method for compensating for these distortions. in this paper, an advanced shunt apf is designed and simulated based on using the multi-level space vector pulse width modulation (ml-svpwm) technique. this control technique, leveraging the instantaneous power (p-q) theory and eliminating the need for a phase-locked loop (pll), provides higher speed and accuracy in generating the reference current. the system s performance was evaluated in both two-level and three-level switching scenarios. simulation results demonstrate that the proposed apf is capable of reducing the total harmonic distortion (thd) of the source current from an initial value of 26.11% to 1.55% in the two-level case, and to 1.38% in the three-level case. these values are well within the permissible limits of the ieee 519-2014 standard, indicating the excellent performance and high precision of the control method in improving the power quality. in addition, if there is a power limitation in two-level inverters, by replacing the two-level inverter with a higher-level one at a lower switching frequency compared to the two-level inverter, higher output power can be achieved from the multilevel inverter.
