application of artificial neural networks for more accurate determination of water tds compared to the conventional method for optimal control of blowdown rate in steam power plants

Authors
Abstract    optimal control of blowdown rate in steam power plant boilers plays a crucial role in enhancing efficiency and reducing energy consumption. a key parameter in this process is total dissolved solids (tds). traditional methods for measuring this parameter, such as online monitoring or laboratory analysis, are often constrained by limitations including harsh operational conditions (high temperature and pressure), chemical instability of samples, and measurement errors. in this study, an artificial neural network (ann) model incorporating inputs of water temperature and electrical conductivity (ec) was designed and trained to predict tds with high accuracy. data were normalized using the standardscaler method, and the model was trained over 200 epochs with a fully connected multi-layer perceptron architecture. model evaluation, based on root mean square error (rmse) on test data, achieved an accuracy of 0.905 ppm. the results demonstrate that this model can serve as an effective tool for real-time monitoring and optimization of blowdown rate in steam power plants, thereby reducing water and energy consumption and mitigating environmental impacts.
