Abstract
the rapid growth in the volume and complexity of satellite data has created unprecedented opportunities—alongside substantial analytical challenges—for earth observation. deep learning, particularly neural-network–based architectures such as cnns, rnns, and attention-based hybrid models, has emerged as a transformative approach for processing, analyzing, and interpreting satellite imagery. this review provides a structured synthesis of the key deep learning models employed across satellite domains and highlights their roles in tasks such as land-use/land-cover classification, change detection, environmental forecasting, and disaster response. architectures such as convolutional neural networks (cnns) excel at extracting spatial features, whereas recurrent neural networks (rnns) and convlstms effectively handle temporal patterns in multitemporal data. the review also examines recent trends in on-board ai, lightweight models for edge computing, and attention mechanisms that enhance accuracy and interpretability. despite notable advances, persistent challenges include data scarcity, limited model generalization, and constraints on explainability. by offering a critical perspective on the current landscape and future directions of neural networks in satellite data processing, this article aims to support research and development in intelligent earth observation systems.
