design and simulation of a phononic crystal-based acoustic sensor for detecting nickel chloride concentration in water

Authors
Abstract    in this paper, the design and simulation of an acoustic sensor based on a solid-solid phononic crystal for simultaneous detection of different concentrations of nickel chloride (nicl2) in water is presented. the structure under study consists of a rectangular array of tungsten cylinders with a radius of 200 ?m and a lattice constant of 500 ?m, embedded in a polymethyl methacrylate (pmma) substrate. using the finite element method, the acoustic scattering properties and wave transmission behavior in the frequency range of 0.8 to 3.2 mhz were investigated. the simulation results show that the change in the acoustic coefficient of the cavity environment due to the change in the nickel chloride concentration causes a distinct shift in the resonance frequency. two concentrations of 0.4356 mol/kg and 0.7707 mol/kg caused two distinct peaks in the transmission spectrum, which allows simultaneous detection of both concentrations. this feature indicates the high potential of the proposed structure in designing multiparameter sensors based on phononic crystals for environmental and industrial applications.
