hidden patterns in cardiovascular complications data of patients with covid-19 using data science

Authors
Abstract    to advance the use of data-driven methodologies in clinical assessment, this study proposes a predictive modeling framework for identifying covid-19 patients at elevated risk of severe cardiovascular complications. the analysis is based on clinical data from 216 patients admitted to shahid faghihi hospital in shiraz and employs l1-regularized logistic regression (lasso), selected for its robust feature selection and overfitting mitigation. the dataset comprised demographic variables, laboratory biomarkers, and clinical and imaging parameters. following data preprocessing and an 80/20 train–test split, predictive models were developed to estimate both intensive care unit (icu) admission requirements and mortality risk. the results demonstrate that correct ventricular function, d-dimer concentration, and the extent of pulmonary involvement are the most significant predictors of icu admission (auc = 0.98). furthermore, pulmonary involvement, c-reactive protein (crp) levels, and patient age emerged as the primary determinants of mortality (auc = 0.99). a comparative evaluation against established international risk stratification tools, including covid-gram and leoss, revealed substantial concordance in the identification of critical prognostic factors. overall, the findings underscore the clinical value of machine learning–based predictive models as components of decision support systems and represent a practical contribution to integrating data engineering, artificial intelligence, and medical research. the proposed framework is readily extensible to other high-risk clinical conditions and supports more efficient allocation of healthcare resources.
