Abstract
major depressive disorder (mdd) is one of the most prevalent psychiatric disorders, which can exert significant negative effects on an individual’s cognitive and emotional functioning. accurate and timely detection of this disorder can facilitate improved treatment processes. this study focuses on identifying brain features associated with mdd using electroencephalography (eeg) signals. data were collected from two groups—healthy individuals and patients with mdd—under both eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions. twelve features, including higuchi’s fractal dimension, shannon entropy, hjorth activity, mobility, and complexity, total energy, and the power of different eeg frequency bands, were employed for analysis. after preprocessing and feature extraction, principal component analysis (pca) was applied for dimensionality reduction. subsequently, five classification models—k-nearest neighbors (k-nn), logistic regression, decision tree, naive bayes, and support vector machine (svm)—were used to classify the data. the results showed that the naive bayes model achieved the highest accuracy, 91.67% and 83.33% in eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions, respectively. this study demonstrates that features extracted from eeg signals can serve as effective tools for identifying depression.
