transforming it infrastructure with 5g networks: opportunities, challenges, and future perspectives

Authors
Abstract    the fifth-generation (5g) technology, as one of the most significant achievements in wireless communications, has brought a profound transformation to information and communication technology (ict) infrastructures. with its ultra-high speed, low latency, and massive connectivity, 5g enables the development of applications such as industrial iot, smart cities, autonomous vehicles, and intelligent healthcare services. in this study, a library-based review of more than fifty scholarly sources from 2014 to 2024 was conducted to analyze the architecture, features, applications, and challenges of 5g networks. the findings indicate that 5g, through technologies such as network function virtualization (nfv), network slicing, and multi-access edge computing (mec), has provided a robust foundation for digital transformation. however, challenges including high infrastructure costs, excessive energy consumption, security concerns, and the absence of unified global standards still hinder full utilization of 5g’s potential. the results conclude that although 5g offers vast opportunities for industrial transformation, significant research gaps remain in areas such as security, energy efficiency, and scalability. therefore, future research should focus on addressing these challenges alongside developing new applications to ensure sustainable and global adoption of 5g technology.
