optimal model predictive control based on artificial neural networks for the alternate arm converter in hvdc systems

Authors
Abstract    this study presents the design of a model predictive control (mpc) framework for regulating current and voltage in an alternate arm converter (aac) employed in high-voltage direct current (hvdc) systems. the main contribution lies in optimizing the weighting factors of the mpc cost function using an artificial neural network (ann). to this end, a neural network with two inputs and two outputs is developed: the inputs correspond to the dc-link voltage and its deviation from the reference value, while the outputs provide the optimized weighting coefficients for the current and voltage cost functions, which are then utilized in the mpc decision-making process. consequently, the controller can dynamically adjust the weighting factors according to system operating conditions—including ac and dc faults—and generate appropriate switching commands for the aac. since achieving the multiple objectives of mpc critically depends on the correct tuning of weighting factors, improper selection may lead to controller instability and even system failure, particularly under disturbances. to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, comprehensive simulations are performed on an hvdc network subject to ac fault scenarios. the performance of the proposed mpc–ann scheme is further compared with that of conventional mpc without ann-based optimization. the results demonstrate that the hybrid approach achieves superior reference-tracking accuracy and enhanced fault tolerance compared to its non-optimized counterpart.
