dimensionality reduction and classification of electroencephalogram data for depression diagnosis using principal component analysis and hidden markov models

Authors
Abstract    depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the world, and its timely diagnosis plays an important role in effective prevention and treatment. in this study, a hybrid approach based on electroencephalogram signals for depression diagnosis is presented, which uses principal component analysis (pca) to reduce dimensionality and remove noise, and hidden markov model (hmm) to extract latent features and temporal dynamics. the data included electroencephalogram recordings from 28 individuals with major depression and 14 healthy individuals in 19 channels and two eye-opening and eye-closed states. the extracted features were analyzed with two classification algorithms, support vector machine (svm) and naive bayes. the results showed that in the eye-opening state, naive bayes had an accuracy of 93% and an f1 score of 94%, while svm had an accuracy of 85% and an f1 score of 86%. in the blindfolded condition, naive bayes had an accuracy of 91% and an f1 score of 91%, and svm had an accuracy of 88% and an f1 score of 87%. these findings indicate that both models have a high ability to distinguish depressed individuals from healthy individuals and can be used as an effective tool for automatic monitoring and diagnosis of depression.
