detecting botnet-based distributed denial-of-service attacks on iot devices using deep neural networks

Authors
Abstract    abstract with the significant growth of iot technology and the widespread connectivity of devices in smart platforms, cybersecurity issues have also become more complex and diverse. one of the serious threats in this area is botnet-based distributed denial-of-service attacks, which disrupt the performance of critical services by saturating network traffic. in this study, a deep neural network-based model is developed to automatically detect distributed denial-of-service attacks in the iot environment. for this purpose, a real dataset including normal traffic samples and botnet attacks was used. the data entered the training process after preprocessing steps including removing redundant features, normalizing numerical values, and binary labeling (normal/attack). the proposed model structure was designed based on a multilayer perceptron. the model was evaluated using classical criteria including accuracy, recall, prediction accuracy, and f1 score, all of which indicated the accurate and stable performance of the model in distinguishing between normal traffic and attack. also, the analysis of the disturbance matrix and the plotting of the receiver operating characteristic curve and the area under the curve index examined the performance of the model in terms of true positive rate and false positive rate and showed that the model has a high ability to detect attack samples with minimal error. the results show that the use of deep neural networks, especially in the form of a multilayer perceptron structure, can be an effective, fast and implementable solution for detecting cyber attacks in internet of things infrastructures; especially in situations where there is a need for real-time response and the use of limited computing resources.
